Malik Siraj Akbar served as a Spring 2012 Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellow at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) in Washington D.C. where his research focused on threats to defenders of democracy in Pakistan's largest province of Balochistan.

Phoenix, AZ

In 2010, the U.S. Department of State awarded Malik Siraj Akbar the ten-month long Fulbright Hubert. H. Humphrey Fellowship which provided him an opportunity to attend the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University (ASU). This was the first ever batch of the Humphrey Fellows at ASU. During his fellowship term, Akbar published his book the Redefined Dimensions of the Baloch Nationalist Movement and did professional affiliations with the Pulitzer Prize-winning Center for Public Integrity in Washington D.C. and the Poynter Institute in Florida.

Washington DC

In spring of 2010, the U.S. Department of State selected Malik Siraj Akbar for its premier professional exchange program the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). A group of eight journalists from Pakistan were selected for this program under the theme "U.S. Foreign Policy Making and the Role of the Media". The delegation visited the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, the State Department, the United Nations headquarters, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), various think-tanks, universities and media organizations in Washington D.C., New York, St. Petersburg,  and Chicago to learn about the U.S. media and politics and also share their knowledge and experiences from Pakistan.

Chennai, India

At the age of 22, Malik Siraj Akbar became the first Pakistani male journalist to be awarded the SAF-Madanjeet Singh Scholarship which enabled him to go to the Asian College of Journalism (ACJ) in Chennai, India. Akbar was enrolled in the Print Stream where he attended courses on politics, gender and identities. He served as the joint-editor of the Convocation Issue of the campus newspaper, the WORD.
